Registration is now open for three grain handling operations courses from the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) and Kansas State University (K-State) Distance Education Program. These online courses run from May 23 – June 24, and registration closes Tuesday, May 17.

Courses are open to anyone, even if they are not a GEAPS member or a student enrolled at K-State. Online registration and more information on individual courses are available on the GEAPS/K-State Distance Education Program website.

GEAPS 506: The grain industry in Canada – climate, crops and people

This all-new course offers a broad and comprehensive view of Canada’s multifaceted and historic grain industry. It should be a valuable resource for anyone who does business in or with Canada, or is a major player in the global grain economy. Participants will gain a better understanding of the influence of Canada’s climate and population, crop production, marketing, regulatory regimens, grading, cleaning and drying, quality control, rail transportation, domestic use and grain exports.

GEAPS 511: Grain facilities planning and design II
This advanced course was completely updated in 2015 with seven new instructors and all-new content that reflects current industry standards and best practices. It provides a practical, real-world foundation for operations professionals responsible for helping plan and design grain facilities. Lectures cover site selection, rail planning, safety, security, roofing, storage and other considerations. Some lectures revisit topics from GEAPS 510: Facilities planning and design I in more depth.

GEAPS 542: Electrical safety for grain and processing facilities
This course provides a basic understanding of electrical safety requirements for grain elevators and processing facilities. It will help participants understand general electrical standards in grain facilities, including the requirements for electric motors and lighting, safety standards and why standards exist. This course will also teach students how to perform an audit, how to identify the classifications in a facility and how to hire qualified electrical contractors.

For grain industry professionals who have already earned a Credential in Grain Operations Management (CGOM), GEAPS 542 is one of four courses required to earn the Specialist Credential in Property and Casualty Risk Management. Learn more about the credential program on the GEAPS website HERE.

Tuition for GEAPS/K-State continuing education courses is US$670 for GEAPS members and US$850 for non-members. GEAPS also offers flexible group training options, including courses on-demand and volume discounts.

For more information about the courses or to register, visit the GEAPS website HERE, contact Katya Morrell or call (763) 999-4300.
